Seine getrockneten Blätter, die auf den Körper eingerieben wurden, setzten ein sehr stark duftendes Öl frei, eine hervorragende Möglichkeit, sich abzukühlen und nach all den Monaten auf hoher See zu parfümieren... Während Bauern der Antillen Ladungen von Zucker mit Ziel Europa herstellten, entdeckten einige ideenreiche Sklaven auf denselben Zuckerrohrplantagen, dass fermentierte Melasse (ein Nebenprodukt des Zuckers) in ein zuckerhaltiges, alkoholisches Getränk umgewandelt werden konnte.
