Jahrhundert als spontane Kreuzung der Wasserminze (Mentha aquatica) und der Krauseminze (Mentha spicata). Aufgrund ihres scharfen Geschmacks bezeichnete man sie nach ihrer Entdeckung als peppermint“. Die mehrjährige Pfefferminze zählt zu den Lippenblütlern (Lamiaceae) und erreicht mit ihren rötlichen Stängeln und lilarosafarbenen Blüten eine Wuchshöhe von etwa 60 cm.
